Symbols are images that we are used to seeing and equating to a certain thought or action. This can be extended to the way we perceive objects and assume their function. To my knowledge it was Meret Oppenheim who first made that fuzzy tea cup after his chat with Picasso, thus tickling our sense of perception, bringing awareness to the rigidity of our perception. Here are a couple of objects that I have played around with, a lamp and an umbrella, one perceived as a source of light and the other a source of shade or shelter. My intent in the following paintings was to switch their roles, thus making an umbrella the source of light and a lamp, a source of a soothing shower. Take a look!
